TRIO sponsored 80 Jacksonville Middle School eighth graders on a field trip to Philander Smith University. Students participated in a campus tour, heard a speech from the vice chancellor, and visited the library's African American art collection. A former Jacksonville High School student led the tour, told us about the history of the HBCU, and talked about the importance of getting good grades in high school. The vice chancellor talked to the group about the mission at Philander Smith University. The college’s mission is to graduate academically accomplished students, grounded as advocates for social justice, determined to change the world for the better.
